Verdant Wins Bucks Paper Sort Contract

Thursday 30 July 2009

Municipal services contractor Verdant has increased its presence in Buckinghamshire after being awarded a multi-council paper sorting contract.

From September, Verdant will manage and operate a paper sort facility at its London Road site in Amersham, providing an initial mechanical and manual sort of around 22,000 tonnes annually of both mixed and separated paper and cardboard.

The contract, for an initial 26 months with a possible extension up to three years, covers newspapers, magazines, paper and cardboard sourced from the kerbside collections and bring banks of Chiltern, South Bucks and Wycombe District Councils, plus cardboard collected from Aylesbury Vale District Council’s bring sites.

Once sorted, paper is bulked for haulage to UPM Kymmene (Shotton), while baled card is bulked for transport to Severnside Recycling.

Glass and cans from kerbside collections are also tipped at the Amersham site and bulked for onward haulage to reprocessors.

It is likely that eight staff from incumbent contractor Veolia will transfer to Verdant’s employment.

Verdant managing director Roger Edwards said: “Verdant has been long established as a provider of quality recycling and refuse services in the region, so we are all delighted to win a further contract that strengthens our roots in Buckinghamshire.”

Councillor Mike Smith, Chiltern DC Cabinet Member with responsibility for environmental management, said: “We are very proud of the paper sort facility in Amersham as it achieves a high quality of paper, and are pleased that the current staff will continue to work there.”

Verdant provides recycling, refuse and cleansing services for Chiltern and South Bucks councils, cleansing and grounds maintenance for Wycombe as well as providing collections from the bring banks for Aylesbury Vale District Council. The company also provides similar services for the new Central Beds unitary authority that came into being in April.
